Why have we waited ten years?

We have been at war for almost ten years which has cost us many lives and altered the lives of countless others. The cost of these wars has been a trillion dollars or more and we have little to show for what these wars have cost in dollars and human collateral. The announcement of the organized preparations to withdraw from Afghanistan is being met with resistance in some political circles. Those who object do so on the grounds that we have not finished what we have started. My answer to these people is simply we have paid enough and the cost has made little difference in the way Afghanistan conducts itself as a nation nor is there more effective security for the residents of the U.S. It is time to let the people of Afghanistan govern themselves and make of their lives what they will. As for America, it is time for us to return home and strengthen our positions at home as well as re-establish our position as the template for the rest of the world to use as a standard for good.
